Photo Flood 122: Midtown

Photographer Joe Rakers

Midtown has been the focus of two previous floods, Photo Flood 35 in June 2015 and Photo Flood 49 in August 2016.  In the 7 years since the last visit much has changed. With the addition of IKEA in the adjacent Central West End neighborhood the area has really grown. The area is now home to City Foundry, a European style food hall that opened in August 2021.

The Foundry is a popular spot and now is home to 17 local kitchens. It also has retail shops and is now home to the Alamo Draft House and City Winery. A Fresh Thyme market is also open in the complex which gives residents of the neighborhood a much needed grocery store.

Just to the south of the Foundry on the other side of I-64 is the Armory. Opening on December 15, 2022 the Armory is an entertainment venue housed in the former home of the Missouri National Guard. The 250,000 square foot venue is now open and free to enter, food and drinks are available for purchase ala carte.

The only American Civil War battle in St. Louis, the Camp Jackson Affair, took place on May 10, 1861, when Union military forces clashed with civilians after capturing the Confederate Missouri Volunteer Militia commanded by General Daniel M. Frost. The Militia had been dispatched to St. Louis by Missouri Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson to seize the St. Louis Arsenal, and secure 40,000 rifles and muskets for the Confederacy. It camped outside St. Louis at Lindell’s Grove which was renamed “Camp Jackson” by the militiamen. The site of Camp Jackson is on the campus of Saint Louis University, commemorated by a historical marker near the university’s Busch Student Center.
